Journey Through the Carolinas, Georgia, and Florida

from July 1, 1765, to April 10, 1766

John Bartram was appointed King's botanist in North America in 1765. His first assignment was to explore the newly acquired colony of East Florida and make a report on the soil and flora. His diary was published under the title Diary of a Journey through the Carolinas, Georgia, and Florida. His diary is important in that it gives us a glimpse of a sparsely settled Florida and his journey laid the foundation for William's travels of 1773–1776.
