Bartram Trail Conference

Bartram Trail Conference members visited the site of Cowee near West's Mill, North Carolina.
The 2013 biennial conference was held the weekend of October 11–13, 2013 at the Mountain in Scaly Mountain, North Carolina. The weekend began with dinner and a demonstration of traditional Cherokee pottery by Mary Thompson.

Saturday's events included the following presentations:
A Cherokee Looks at William Bartram,” Tom Belt, Elder-in Residence, Cherokee Language Instructor at Western Carolina University

Botany Panel: “The Botany of the Cherokee Mountains, Then and Now,” Dan Pittillo, Ed Schwartzman, Jack Johnston

Cherokee Trails and Trading Paths,” Lamar Marshall

Following Billy into the Vale of Cowee, on Saturday afternoon the Bartram Trail Conference took a driving tour down the Little Tennessee River to visit the sites of the Cherokee towns Nikwasi, Watauga, and Cowee.

On Sunday morning members hiked on the North Carolina Bartram Trail to Scaly Mountain. Sunday lunch was served on the Bartram Botanical Trail at the Highlands Botanical Station.
